In these unprecedented times many people are experiencing a heightened sense of fear and anxiety as a result of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on their lives. This fear is compounded of a multitude of things including the uncertainty surrounding how long the pandemic will last, whether life will ever return to “normal” and if by the time the pandemic is over our sense of normalcy will be completely eroded. Some fear losing their jobs, others have, unfortunately, already lost theirs and do not know how they will provide their own basic needs (food, shelter etc) in the immediate future or long run. a, Isolation and social distancing are eroding many people’s wellbeing. Not to mention the tens of thousands of lives that have been lost globally.
Some have questioned why this is happening, why are so many people dying? Those are valid questions, but ones I do not seek to address now as that’s a discussion on it’s own.
If you are a follower of Jesus Christ now is an even more important time to stay spiritually strong and keep faithful to God. Remember that fear is a weapon used by the enemy to bring us down, to cause us to lose hope in Christ. The enemy is a joy stealer and a hope killer (see John 10:10). If ever there is a time we need to have faith in God, it is now!
What is faith?
“Faith is the substance of things hope for, the evidence of things not seen” – Hebrews 11:1.
I have personally found that having faith by trusting and believing that God is in control has helped, and continues to help, me navigate these uncertain times. It has given me comfort in knowing that this too shall pass but in the meantime God has my back. As a believer in Jesus Christ I must encourage you to keep the faith also. Isaiah 35:4 says: “Tell everyone who is discouraged, Be strong and don’t be afraid! God is coming to your rescue…”
Below, I have listed a few scriptures as a reminder of God’s faithfulness towards us. I hope these serve as encouragement for you to remain fearless and spiritually strong in Christ at this time.
So do no fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.
The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer
1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
I hope that these scriptures help to encourage your heart. There are many more verses in the bible that you can lean upon during lockdown.
What’s one scripture that is helping you to stay faith during the Covid-19 pandemic?
